What is Robot Assisted Dental Implant Surgery?

It’s important to note that during robot assisted dental implant surgery the robot does not perform surgery. Instead, the robotic technology guides the surgeon to make sure the implants are placed correctly. It does this using physical cues that let the surgeon know the location of the implant as well as how deep to drill. The surgeon maintains control the whole time and is able to make adjustments as necessary.

There are many benefits to using robots in dental surgery, for both the surgeon and most importantly the patient. 

More Accurate

Accuracy is important during any medical procedure. It is especially important for the placement of dental implants. Errors in implant placement can cause problems both during and after surgery. A misplaced implant can cause a lot of discomfort and pain during recovery. So, it’s important for surgeons to make sure implants are placed exactly where they need to be.

Using robotic technology allows us to place implants more accurately than ever before. 

YOMI utilizes 3D imaging to help surgeons plan out exactly where each implant needs to go. 3D imaging has also allowed for the development of tools that act as a guide for the surgeon as they place implants. These guides make it possible for the surgeon to stick to the previously laid-out plan as accurately as possible. 

After developing the 3D plan the robot guides the dentist to the location of the implant. If your surgeon deviates from the plan the robot restrains the tool and guides it back to the right spot. As the dentist drills YOMI stops once it hits the planned depth. 

Of course, your surgeon is able to make adjustments to the plan as necessary during the procedure. Video feedback is often used to help your dentist see what changes they need to make as they place your implants.

 Less-Invasive

Another benefit of robot assisted dental implant surgery is that it’s less invasive than a traditional implant procedure. 

During a typical implant procedure, your surgeon needs to be able to see your jaw bone in order to place the implant. That means they need to make an incision in your gums. This can be very uncomfortable and often leads to a longer recovery time. 

With the YOMI robot however, the incision is either very small or nonexistent. Because the incision is smaller, it takes less time for your mouth to heal. The faster your mouth takes to heal after the implant is placed, the quicker you get your smile back. 

More Efficient

Using robotics allows us to be more accurate and ensures the surgery is less invasive. All of this means we are able to be more efficient. 

The traditional implant procedure can take a long time. Before YOMI, you would have to wait to get the temporary teeth that fill in the gaps until it’s time to place your new teeth. This can often take several appointments. You also have to wait for your mouth to heal. 

The use of YOMI robotics cuts out a lot of the waiting time. With the use of 3D imaging, the robots can easily create a plan for the surgery and place your temporary teeth all in one day. And the smaller incision means you don’t have to wait as long for your mouth to heal.
