Finding Answers for TMJ Pain

Problem: TMJ Pain for Teen
Anyone who has dealt with the pain and other side effects of a TMJ disorder knows how much it can take a toll on your life. It becomes hard to eat the foods you love. You start missing out on important parts of your life because it hurts so much. For many patients, the pain in their jaw joint starts out mild. And you can keep it from getting worse by taking pain medications, resting the joint, and using ice and heat. For many patients this is enough to get rid of the pain and move on with their lives.
But for others, like Madison Brown, the pain only gets worse no matter what they do.
Madison’s TMJ pain started when she was 16. And it quickly took over her life. It hurt to chew, so she stopped chewing gum. It got to the point where she couldn’t eat the things she liked to eat, like pizza and steak. She started getting migraine headaches. Her headaches were so bad she missed school and work.
“It’s the difference in are you enjoying life or are you not? If you’re in constant pain and something is constantly on your mind, you are not living your life to the fullest,” says Madison’s mom.
Madison’s jaw pain was keeping her from enjoying her life. She felt like she had nothing left. She was on a completely liquid diet because it hurt so much to open her mouth.

Solution: The Answers She Was Looking for
And that’s when Madison found PRECiDENT Center for Facial and Dental Medicine in. Dr. Bolding and the PRECiDENT team were able to finally give Madison an answer for her TMJ pain. She felt for the first time in a long time that there was hope for a pain free life.
The PRECiDENT team was able to unravel what was going on with Madison’s jaw joint. The TMJ is similar to other joints in the body. And so it’s important to take an orthopedic approach to treating it. This involves a deep understanding of the anatomy of the joint. Understanding how the joint works and how it’s put together makes it easier to find the cause of pain more easily. Once we can identify what’s going on in the joint, we can offer a better treatment plan.
That’s exactly how the PRECiDENT Florida team approached Madison’s jaw pain. We worked together to make sure they had an accurate diagnosis before we offered a solution. This collaborative, orthopedic approach to Madison’s TMJ disorder enabled us to finally help her realize that there was hope for her.
